Cycling up Bukit Malawati, Kuala Selangor, Malaysia

If you feel like doing some moderate climbing you can cycle up Bukit Malawati in Kuala Selangor. To make it more challenging leave your 30-speed mountain bike at home and bring out your 6-speed 20 inch tyre folding bikes to do the job.

The hill used to be a strong fort for the Selangor Sultanate in late 18th to 19th century. Its strategic location overlooking the mouth of Selangor River and the Straits of Malacca in the direction of Sumatra Indonesia made it an ideal site for a look-out point. There is also a beautiful light house built on top of the hill in 1907 and still being used today.

You can still see the remnants of the old fort which was built from 1782 by Sultan Ibrahim to fight against the Dutch. When the Dutch finally captured the fort it was renamed Altingsburg Fort.

There is also two distinct groups of monkeys on top of the hill, the Silverleaf monkey and the Long-tailed Macaques. You can feed them but as always exercise caution as they are wild beings.
